How to clean your carpets between shampoos

Clean carpets can make your whole home look clean, and dirty carpets…well… you get the idea, right? These expert tips will help you keep your carpets looking clean as new, even in between shampoos.

CLEANING CARPETS
THE RIGHT WAY

Are you doing all you can to keep your carpets looking fresh? Read on to find out!
Step 1: Vacuum regularly
Tip: Place mats at every entrance of your home to cut down on tracked-in dirt.

Meg Roberts, president of Molly Maid, says you should vacuum your carpets as least once a week — more if you have pets! It’s no one’s favorite chore, but it doesn’t take long, and it goes a long way toward keeping your carpet looking great.
Step 2: Keep it fresh

No one knows better than Laurie Morse-Dell, of Pup’s Place, that kids and animals can quickly make our carpets in need of a refresher. Her secret is an easy one. “As a dog lover, carpet cleaning is a constant chore. The great news is there's a simple and eco-friendlier way to go about it. Mix equal parts baking soda and Borax, sprinkle the mixture lightly over carpet and let it sit for one hour. Then vacuum,” she says.
Step 3: Be ready for spots

Let’s face it — spills happen. The key is to be ready for them when they do.

“For water-based spills, act immediately,” says Roberts. “Fill a bowl with water and a quarter-sized amount of soap. Lightly blot the soiled area. Layer a towel over the damp area and put something heavy on top of it — a bank, books, etc. — to soak up the stain and extra water.”

Greasy stains can be intimidating, but they are nothing you can’t handle. “If you spill grease on the carpet, apply a generous amount of baking soda or corn meal and brush lightly over the soiled area. Leave it on overnight and vacuum the next day,” says Roberts
